Local lawyer severs ties with Florida’s ‘Foreclosure King’

Published: 3:27 pm Tue, November 9, 2010 3:27 pm Tue, November 9, 2010  By Mass. Lawyers Weekly Staff

High-profile foreclosure lawyer Mark P. Harmon has encountered difficulties on both ends of the East Coast.

Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office is currently investigating Harmon’s Newton-based Harmon Law Office. The state’s largest foreclosure-processing firm is accused of violating a new state law that protects renters from being evicted from foreclosed properties, says Amie Breton, a press secretary for the AG’s Office.

Tina Cassidy, a spokeswoman for Harmon Law, says the evictions were proper because the foreclosures took place prior to Aug. 7, when the law took effect. The firm also argues that its clients, who are mortgage lenders, actually carried out the evictions, according to The Boston Globe.

Harmon’s also busy trying to sever his ties to embattled Florida foreclosure lawyer David J. Stern. Crowned the “Foreclosure King,” Stern has caught the eye of the AG in his state, where he is the subject of an investigation into allegations of rampant fraud, including the falsification of court documents to expedite foreclosures, a process known as robo-signing.

Bob Kerr: A cruel attempt to put a family on the street (Providence Journal 4/17/2011)

You can’t do it this way. You can’t just show up at a family’s door and tell them to get out with no notice. It’s thuggery.

But it almost happened. If not for some fast moving lawyers who know the territory and a compassionate cop, Angela Martinez and her three children and granddaughter would have been out on Lenox Avenue in Providence Tuesday morning.

...but they do know Harmon Law of Newton, Mass., is handling the foreclosure and eviction.

...Babcock said he was waiting for the next step in the process — probably a 10-day notice to Martinez to get out.
